Can I replace my treble hooks on my lures with any of the VMC hooks?
Each lure is designed to have a certain swimming action. The swimming action comes from the shape of the lure, the size of the lip if any and the size and weight of the hooks. When replacing your hooks on your lures, you must be sure that you are using the right hooks. VMC has developed a unique chart in cooperation with all the Lure manufacturers we are working with. Please refer to our replacement hook manual to find out our best recommendations.

What hooks go on my favorite lure?
Please refer to the VMC replacement hook manual.

What does the first number on the hook reference number stand for?
All hooks with a 7 --- at the beginning of the reference number is a Needle Point hook or a Fastgrip hook.
All hooks starting with 8 --- are Cone Cut hooks.
All hooks beginning with 9 --- are Cut Point hooks.
Hooks with a 5 --- at the beginning are ultra sharp Pyramid Cone Point hooks.
Please refer to the VMC Points section to learn more about VMC technology.

What is the interest of Vanadium versus High Carbon steel hooks?
Both material are premium quality steel that will guarantee VMC hooks the best possible performance when it comes to resistance to opening or breaking strength.
The advantage of Vanadium steel is the lightness of the material and its incredible resistance. Vanadium steel is much lighter than regular high carbon steel. It is a great advantage when you assemble the hook on a lure or fish with live bait as you are not adding too much weight to your bait. You can also afford to have a thinner wire diameter without compromising on resistance. Vanadium steel is great on any finesse style hooks or hooks that require instant penetration. Please check our Vanadium hook selection on the VMC Online Catalog by selecting “Vanadium” on the search engine.

I can’t find ref…..in the stores? Is it still available?
All hooks that are listed on the VMC Inc Website are available in the US. If you cannot find the reference you are looking for, please check the following cross reference list as we have changed some hook numbers over the past few years.

What is the interest of Needle Point versus Cone Cut point?
Both are premium and very sharp points. We usually recommend to use Needle Point on finesse style hooks or thin wire diameter hooks for Live Bait fishing or Bass Fishing. The Needle Point will offer a great resistance to bending and will last longer on thin wire diameter hooks.
As the wire diameter increases, the Needle Point will offer more contact surface than a Cone Cut point. Consequently, penetration using the Needle Point will not be as fast as using a Cone Cut point. The main interest of the Cone Cut point is that the cone at the tip of the point will stick instantly and prevent the fish from spitting out the hook. The cutting edge will then go through bones or flesh without any problem, whatever the wire diameter of the hook.

Are VMC Hooks Chemically Sharpened?
VMC has a world-exclusive fully automated manufacturing process. The very first hook we manufacture is the same as the very last. This consistency is unique to VMC and we make sure that when our hooks come out of our machines, they are already very sharp thanks to an extremely sophisticated mechanical sharpening process. We do not have to apply a very heavy chemical sharpening to our hooks to make them sharp. This gives VMC a great advantage compared to our competitors who do not have any other choice but to intensively chemically sharpen their hooks. Their finished product is a very sharp hook.....but a very brittle one too! VMC hooks will be sharp but also very strong; the point will not bend and the hook will not break on big fish!

What is the interest of the red color hooks and can I use them in salt water?
We believe at VMC that red color has nothing to do with blood and that the interest of this color is somewhere else. Red color (and it has been scientifically proven many times), is the first color of the spectrum that disappears under the water. Five feet underwater, red hooks will become “invisible” to the eye of the fish. This is where we believe the interest of red hooks lies. When fishing live bait or when assembling red hooks on a crank bait, the red color will make your hook invisible so the only thing that the fish can see is a lure or a bait with a very realistic action and nothing else to catch its attention.
VMC red hooks are called TIN RED hooks. They are manufactured and designed to be used in both Fresh and Saltwater as we apply a Saltwater resistant coating to all our red hooks.

What is the interest of an INLINE treble hook versus a regular treble hook?

INLINE treble hooks have a rotated eye that allows your treble hooks to sit perfectly symmetrically on your crank baits. The rotated eye will almost turn the front hook into a quill which will make your lure track perfectly in any conditions. When using traditional treble hooks, most trolling lures will lose their action above 5 knots trolling speed. With the INLINE treble, you are able to troll up to 11 knots without losing the action of your lure.

Also, you improve your hooking rate by being able to orientate your points the right way on your lures. The front hook will have one point facing down which always stays far from the lure body and will therefore set more easily. The rear hook will have one point facing up perfectly in-line with the attack of the fish drastically reducing short bite.

What finish do you recommend for Saltwater?
Permasteel is by far the most efficient finish you can find on the market. PS is a VMC unique to the market coating that guarantees hours of resistance to corrosion and protection for your hooks in a salt water atmosphere.
Tin Red and Tin are also very efficient and specially saltwater designed finishes. We do recommend Tin and Tin Red for trolling lures more specifically.

Which is your best treble hook?
All VMC hooks offer great results but we of course always come up with new innovative designs in order to solve specific problems that fishermen have.
The most recent breakthroughs in the treble technology are :
SURE SET
INLINE
BARBARIAN
We invite you to consult full product information on our New Products Page.

What is the interest of the Fastgrip point?
The Fastgrip point with its three micro barbs ensures the setting of the hook with only 1/3 of the pressure of a regular hook. This is the guarantee that your hook will set by itself before the fish even feel it and try to spit it out.
Also, the Fastgrip point will create a lot less damage than a regular barbed hook. It reduces the bleeding and prevents wounding so it will allow you to catch and release all fish with less risk of seeing them die 20 minutes later…

Does VMC make a circle hook and what is the interest of them?
Yes we do. As a matter of fact we do offer both light wire and heavy wire circle hooks for fresh and salt water. Please refer to refs 7384 7381 and 8382 of our catalog. We just recently introduced the IGFA and Billfish association tournament approved circle ref 7385. This is not just another tournament approved hook, ref 7385 is the widest gap circle hook on the market for even better hooking rate!!!! Check this reference on the New product section.

Do you have a dough bait treble hook for trout fishing?
VMC most popular hook for dough bait is reference 9617 GOLD (GO) and BRONZE (BZ) treble hooks. They are manufactured in sizes #12 #14 #16 & #18.
This year, VMC is introducing its brand new ref 5534 SURE SET Trout treble that has been specifically developed for dough bait and other trout rigs like the “cheese rig” style rigs. Hooking rate is unequaled and this is a real revolution for trout fishermen!

What hook do you recommend for Big Game fishing?
VMC just recently introduced two new designs of BIG GAME hooks which feature VMC's unique to the market DYNACUT point. Refs 8705 - 8709

What is the interest of ringed hooks?
Ringed hooks are the ultimate live bait hooks. They eliminate all risk of breaking at the knot as you can forget about using loop knots and tie your line directly to the ring with a full knot.
The ring will give maximum freedom of action to your bait so it looks even more attractive.
Please refer to the Ringed Hook section on our website to learn more about the one-piece solid ring technology.

What is your strongest treble hook?
VMC manufactures the world's strongest treble hook which is called the FISHFIGHTER ref 8527. This is a 6X strong treble hook on the VMC strength scale (7X or even 8X on some of our competitors' strength scales).
We also recently introduced ref 5538 SURE SET 6X strong. Not only do you get the strength, you also get the best possible hooking rate you could dream of on your lures.
VMC 6X strong hooks have been tested on the world's strongest fish such as Baramundi in Australia or Peacock Bass in Costa Rica and Brazil as well as Musky…we never had one hook open!
